Getting Started

Isopods are hardy, low-maintenance, and a great addition to any invertebrate setup — many keepers get them as a self-sustaining cleanup crew for a spider or reptile enclosure, while others keep them purely for their own colourful, ever-multiplying colonies. This guide covers the essentials: housing, humidity, temperature, feeding, and their role as a cleanup crew.

Housing & Substrate

A closed plastic or glass container works well, with a few small ventilation holes drilled into the sides rather than the lid to help hold in humidity. Fill it with at least 3-4 inches of substrate — a mix of organic topsoil and coconut coir with a layer of leaf litter on top gives isopods plenty to burrow into and graze on. Add pieces of bark or cork bark for extra hiding spots, since isopods are naturally secretive and do best when they can tuck themselves away.

Humidity & Temperature

Most beginner-friendly species, like Porcellio scaber, do well with a humidity gradient rather than a uniformly damp enclosure — mist one side every few days to keep it moist while letting the other side dry out, so your isopods can move between the two as needed. Room temperature suits them fine, generally around 18-24°C (65-75°F); avoid placing their enclosure somewhere that gets direct sun or drafts from air conditioning, as sudden temperature swings stress the colony.

Feeding

Dried leaf litter is the staple of an isopod’s diet and should always be available in the enclosure. Supplement this with the occasional piece of blanched vegetable (carrot, courgette, or similar) two to three times a week, removing any leftovers within 48 hours to avoid mould. A small piece of cuttlebone or eggshell left in the enclosure gives them a source of calcium, which supports strong, healthy exoskeletons.

Cleanup Crew Role

If you’re keeping isopods alongside a jumping spider or other invertebrate, they’ll happily clean up leftover prey, shed exoskeletons, and general waste in a bioactive setup, helping keep the enclosure fresh with minimal effort on your part. Just make sure there’s enough leaf litter and substrate depth for them to establish a healthy colony of their own alongside their housemate.

Warning Signs & General Care Tips

A thriving colony should show isopods of all sizes, from tiny juveniles to full-grown adults, actively moving around when you check on them. If numbers seem to be dropping or you’re seeing a lot of dead individuals, check that humidity hasn’t dropped too low or that the substrate hasn’t become too acidic — both are common causes of a colony crash. Mould or fungus gnats usually point to too little airflow or overly wet substrate, so ease off misting and make sure ventilation holes aren’t blocked. With the right balance of moisture, food, and space, an isopod colony can be remarkably self-sufficient and will keep growing for years.
